In the background? Use billboards.

The Dosch VizImages trees are good.
They include planar 3d objects (i.e. a flat poly) in LW format (plus others) which lets you position them within lightwave and they are at correct scales.

When you need trees other than in the background & you are using radiosity.

Un-check Use Global for the trees & use an extremely low RPE 24, SBR 8, AT 70, MinPS 4, MaxPS 100 for example, you can even go lower quality than this. With trees in general I rarely ever go much higher than this for a foreground tree. You will still have radiosity but will cut down render times a lot.

Also, have say 3 versions of a tree, High detail for foreground. Medium detail & low or very low detail for more distant trees.

The background trees do as suggested above or use 6 poly tree with alpha maps.

Use HD-Instance or Kray, and use detailed trees.
