ok im gonna place my order with apple today and am just wondering is it worth getting the dual or should i just go for the 1.8 ghz the reson im asking is some threads ive read seem to say you dont always benifit that much from dual processors and i just dont want to spend that much money unless its worth it ....thx:)

The minimal price difference between the singles and the duals makes the dual machine the best value by far. Not only is it at least 200MHz faster - but then you get another whole processor.
LW is multithreaded so you'll see a roughly 50% speed increase with final renders.

I say if you can afford the Duel get it. Got to take in consideration the rest of the system performance should go up. Not just LW.
There are other Apps and also the OS is built for it. The Dual will give you longer shelf life which will pay it self off. Usually you see folks who bought Dual boxes use those boxes longer, Dual G4 450, 500, 800 also in the PC world alot of Dual 933 and 500 out there still running. So it depend on what you want, if you just want the latest and greatest get the single if you want Longer shelf life and have the $$ or patients get the Dual.
Also remember the New OS X coming out will have a switch user feature that will really test Single CPU boxes (Just a thought).

Well im gonna place my order rite after i type this message and im gonna go with the dual. Im using a single 733 g4 at the moment wich is great but i figure im really gonna love the performace boost with the dual thanks for the comments just needed a bit of outside advice as this is allot of money for me to spend...hehe
ill post some tests with lightwave once i get it.....later:cool:

Good luck!! let us know the performance. Install Povray on it if you can and do a benchmark render.
733Mhz is a nice box, the first 733Mhz rocked. I ordered the second 733Mhz the 2 weeks later the 933Mhz came out and my order still didn't ship so MacWarehose changed my order. Cool beans!!!
Keep that 733Mhz as your office / 2D texturing box that way it won't feel left out the mix.
I bought a XEON 2.4GHz box and my G4 933 got sad so I now use it more then my other boxes.

I've been a bit disappointed in the past with Lightwave and dual processing.

'Roughly', Beam.
Come on, it ain't that bad!
Ive actually read some plugins actually render slower when 2+ threads is seen on a dp comp.

That's probably if you have it set to render 2 or more threads. HV is like that. Non-multi-threaded processes are supposed to go a little faster, because 1 processor plays 'traffic cop'
Well I have a semi-related question...
I am running a Dual Processor 533mHz G4. I have been toying with getting an OWC Mercury Elite 1.2gHz upgrade card.
Question is, will the increased clock speed make up for the fact that I am losing one processor, albeit a processor that is half the speed???
This inquiring mind wants to know!! ;) :D

I think it would make up for it, but it wouldn't be much of an upgrade - it doesn't sound worth the money
