well looking at the results we can see that the country with more results is Malaysia followed by New Zealand and Japan.
what amazes me is that the language with more searches about lightwave is Japanese and we know so little about what is going on there.
(I'm not even looking at the graph going downhill....hmm, maybe newtek should look a bit more to advertising)

The Lightwave graph looks very similar to the Softimage one only Softimage's results have very few English speaking countries...really only Canada.

can we trust these graphs?

Of course you can trust these graphs! Meaning, they are not made up out of the blue by anyone to deceive, but automatically generated by the info available to google. These graphs state facts - which can or cannot be your truth. It certainly is the google web statistics truth.
The question is what you read into them.
This means you need to think about what is actually displayed... what information does google gather? What is discarded?
And another thing: considering the fact that "lightwave" is not only a software by Newtek but also connected to fibre optics technology (with this meaning outweighing the software meaning probably quite a bit) you should perhaps change some of the input parameters. ;)

Interesting, Melbourne being the number one LW city...I should move back home. Shame...it doesn't list companies that use LW :D

Does anyone know what the scale of the graph is?

Uh the graph represents the total volume of searches. I think the decline in the graph represents nothing more than an increase in searches for things other than Lightwave.
Folks using 3d software (being computer savvy) were probably more likely to be searching for stuff on the internet early on than many other things, like say knitting. But as the internet becomes used by more and more people the overall volume of searches for lightwave would be a smaller and smaller percentage of the total search volume.
Here is a sad one: http://www.google.com/trends?q=lightwave+core&ctab=0&geo=all&date=all&sort=0

Agreed. One of the big SEO terms at the moment is 'Long tail keywords' which is a way for websites to tap into more specific search terms - something which has become neccessary because single word phrases are becoming less meaningful as the internet becomes more diluted. Check the stats for the word 'Maya'...the software is way down the list of relevant pages, especially since the whole 2012 thing kicked off.
A great example is actually something I've been doing today...I'm seeing some old friends tonight, they're playing a warm-up gig nearby and I was searching for their website to catch up a little as they've been quiet for a couple of years. When they first changed their name in the 90's it was quite a neat idea to call themselves 'A' as they got to the front of the music shop index's...but it's completely useless when you're searching online in 2009. Equally, if you search for one of their biggest songs, 'Starbucks' you'll just find loads of links to a coffee shop...but search for 'A Starbucks' and you get some relevant stuff.

Will do :D
The first two albums are great, they were much less serious before the label put the pressure on (probably hence the album name). I first got to know them around 1990 when they were called Grand Designs...for such a small town we've had our fair share of successful bands - A, Catherine Wheel/Rob Dickinson, The Darkness plus a bunch of lesser known ones...I hoped to be part of the list but it never quite happened:rolleyes:

Not too surprising since "amiga" is the Spanish word for female friend. I'm sure if I knew what that was in Quechua (the native language of Peru), it would put that country top of the list too... ;)

change a letter and you get this: http://www.google.com/trends?q=amigo&ctab=0&geo=all&date=all&sort=0
Why are amigo's so consistently popular in June/July?
