I am about to buy a new machine and am currently running Lightwave 3D seven on mac OS 9. Will I be able to run my existing version of Lightwave 3D seven on mac OS 10 on the new machine with out any problems?
Thanks Matt.

Hi Matt
If you check your install disk you will find out if you have the osx version if you don't the visit the newtek downloads site (I'd upgrade to 7.5 while you're at it)
You will find that lightwave is much more stable on osx. Also it's a miles better os for everything else also Upgrade as much of your software as you can to osx so you don't have to bother with 'classic' I found it all a bit strange at first but I really don't regret the move and I don't miss os9 at all apart from not having adobe's type reunion. A good move is to buy 'OSX the missing manual'
regards

I also thought it was a big jump moving to OS X.. It felt quite awkward, but now I haven't used Classic for around eight months I think. I don't even think about it.
Hmm, not too helpful I know. At least I can say one thing that's helpful though: Get lots of RAM! ;)

There are still a few plug-ins/features that were not ported to Lightwave OS X yet, as far as I know.
In addition, be aware of the ATI/OS X/Modeler issues (you may need to model in OS 9 still, or not upgrade the OS as far as 10.2.6). Also, if you upgrade to 7.5c and find that a number of features fail to work that you used to use, check the buglist thread to find workarounds.
OS X is different, but it's closer than working Mac OS/Windows back and forth, so just take some time to adjust to the new structure. And MAKE SURE YOU USE THE "USER" directories. In OS 9 you could put files anywhere. You still can, sort of, in OS X, but it is NOT recommended, suggested, or even looked approvingly upon.
Enjoy the upgrade, but be prepared for a little disorientation.

I recommend you jump straight to OS X 10.2.4 with Lightwave 7.5. This is a good, stable combination. It's much more stable than OS9.
There are some issues with OS X 10.2.6 and LW7.5c which you should search this forum on before upgrading that far.

It's funny how quickly we stop using 'Classic' mode in OS X. I don't use it either. It's rather ironic, as Classic was one of the biggest engineering tasks undertaken by Apple to smooth the transition to OS X. Instead, everyone's upgrading their apps to be OS X native.

Hehe...I only use Classic every now and then because I'm either: a) too lazy or b) too cheap to upgrade my apps to their OSX counterparts. I still use Dreamweaver 2 for my web publishing needs (it's more than enough for maintaining my personal site), and I still boot into 9 to play Unreal Tournament (haven't gotten 2K3...I've got Unreal Championship for Xbox, so that's enough for me!:D ) Once in a while I'll boot into 9 for Norton Utilities so I can defrag my OSX drive (I have 9 and X on separate drives), but most of the time I'll just boot directly from the Norton disc...I find it's easier, that way I can take care of all my drives at once. :)
Anyway, to add to what the others have said, if you have an ATI card, DO NOT install any OS past 10.2.4 if you intend to use Lightwave. 10.2.4 works great with LW and ATI cards, 10.2.5 and 10.2.6 have serious issues which will, in all likelihood, prevent you from getting any kind of work done with the program.

That's a smart move with that one. I got my hands on a beta of the OS X port of UT, and I was disappointed, to say the least. When I attempted to find out more about development, it was a dead end. Apparently the company that was doing the UT port (which was a free upgrade to UT owners) transitioned to UT2k3, and are now transitioning to Unreal2. :(

I had always wondered about the X port of UT...I heard rumors about it, but nothing ever seemed to surface into reality. It's too bad...there are certain things (flak cannon, redeemer) which I feel are better done in UT than in 2K3. Oh well...:(

I don't even have the classic enviroment in my machine anymore. I've never look back.
My humble advice is: Jump straight to Jaguar. Do the same for Panther when it's ready. I've tryed it and it's perfect!
