little more information please - is that a problem image or is that what you want to achieve, and what do you mean by 'round surface' as it pertains to the image?

Hi, If you mean how to do a squarish hole in a subpatch part of a model you can use weights to accomplish it, atleast thats how I would do it. If this is not what you meant please give us some more information on the problem.

cheers

I think you need to cut those 5 sided Polys. Something like this.

Here's the model. That section of mesh looks like part of a Cyborg Girl that was posted over at CG Channel yesterday.

This tool will help:

http://www.flay.com/GetDetail.cfm?ID=1355

If you want square hole in a sub-patch object, use weights.
If you want a round hole, use more subdivisions.

It is the cybergirl image. I've attached what the subdivided finished mesh looks like and the resulting little circles in the mesh....

extra detail mainly created with the plug I mentioned above - add edges

hope this helps...

or just smooth shift twice in row

Can you show me step by step how you went about that....a small tutorial if you will....it would be greatly appreciated.

Use Edgetools to make the diamond shape that omeone did.

Then select and Merge the 4 centre Polys.

Then then inset bevel the central quad.

Then Shift Bevel and your just about done.

Maybe Smoothshift the bottom of the hole if you want a hard edge.

HI walkinginspace,
here's a quick video:
http://homepage.eircom.net/~omeone/New_clip0017.avi

I hope you can pick up what I was doing here, I didn't record sound to keep the file size small (and because I cant stand listening to my own voice ;) )

I have only used 4 commands anyway:
-Box (SHIFT+x)
-Add Edges (F9 for me - that's how good I think this tool is)
-Delete (Del)
-Extrude (SHIFT+e)

There is documentation on the Edgetools plugin at the link above or in the download I think.

I'm not saying this is the best way to achieve this, in fact - I've never made a hole this way before myself, I usually used the smooth-shift that Toby is talking about, in LW there are many many ways to skin the cat.

On a last point, the reason there is extra edges in my pics, is because LW does not create sub-patches from polys with more than 4 sides (yet;)), if the example you posted was done in LW, you'd have to add edges as shown below to keep all polys with 4 edges

A lot of times when I need a hole in an object, I'll take the detail out approach and start with the hole, add the immediate surrounding geometry, and then stitch it back into the mesh.

Nice clip, omeone.
