upgrading to 9.6 from 8.5

hi all
i am soon going to upgrade from 8.5-9.6 and was wondering about having both working on my dual 2.8 intel mac untill i get confortable with all the new stuff in 9..did i read something about needing a new dongle for 9.6?
will 8.5 work with that dongle?

Afaik you need the new dongle only for Core and 9.6.1/64, 9.6 should work with the old dongle too.

If a new dongle is required, which seems unlikely because Duo dongles have been issued since LW 7, it's worth bearing in mind that discontinued 3rd party plugins tied to your old dongle will not function with the new one (and you won't be able to do anything about that).

You need to set up a new preference folder for 9.6 within the your 9.6 app folder and then you should be fine...there's a few threads on that hiding around here somewhere :D

Basically, if you have two versions of Lightwave, they will read the same preference file(the one in your username/Library/preferences/LightWave3D folder)...over writing each others settings etc.

With LW 9.x, they made a change, so you can add a preference folder within in your LW9.6 folder and it'll look for it there.

So manually create the Preferences folder within this path and copy your License.key over...don't forget to update the license key for LW9.6:

LightWave3D 9.6/SharedSupport/Preferences/License.key
