There are indeed some houses that use LW on occasion but I don't know of any house that has a major dedication to it. I think that you'll find that most of the major players in Atlanta, etc. use Maya with a sprinkling of XSI here and there. There are a number of individual users though.
Here are two smaller studios which pretty much use LW solely.
Product M (http://www.productm.com)
CYKE (http://www.cyke.com)
Supposedly there is a user group in Atlanta called LUMA but I have been unable to get any info on meetings, etc.
Not sure of your interest, but the Art Inst. and UGA also provide classes in LW.

Well, I have got friends in Georgia who invited me to spend the holidays there ( I am a frenchman living in germany), so I thought I might take the chance and get in contact with studios down there...its good to have a base to start from when You are going into a whole different country, Ya know, not having to worry about a place to stay for a few weeks etc.
Thanks a lot for providing those links !

I'm in Atlanta, GA. We use LW almost exclusively. We do freelance but I also recently got a full time job, where we use pretty much everything in the book to get the job done... yep including Max... YUCK!
This is my Home Studio:
Motion Blur Studio (http://www.motionblurstudio.com)
I hire freelancers once in a while when my wife and I can not do the job by ourselves.

Emmanuel, I'm also based in Atlanta - but, I'm solo. Nevertheless, if you're ever in Atlanta - look me up. Je parle le francais.
"Anieves", I like your website a lot especially the medically related images of microbes and such. Where in Atlanta are you located? I live near Candler park with my Fiancee.

It brings tears to my eyes when I can read that there are other lw users in the ATL for awhile there I thought I was the only one.
I read the post about Dan Ablan and some Chicago lw users who got together and reastablished the lightwave user group in the Chicago area_man I wish we could do that here in Atlanta. What do my fellow users in the ATL think,...I'm gained.

Hi chikega! Thx for the nice comments.
I live in the Buford area... near Lake Lanier but I work around the Perimeter Mall area.
adhesiveX; There is a 3d group in ATL not LW specific... I used to go but I haven't been able to make it to the meetings for a while now:(
If you want more details about it LMK.
Emmanuel, if you decide to make the trip maybe we all can get together and have a couple cold ones, I even get the first round... with free beer maybe proton would come too :D

anieves: Buford. I used to live in Duluth and commute up to Buford right across from the Mall of GA. I was going against traffic - but man, you're with traffic all the way down I-85 and I-285 - tough commute. Thanks about the eyeball - it's done with Color, Diffusion, Luminosity, and Specular maps painted in Photoshop. The pupil constricting uses endomorphs. Nothing earth shattering - but I did use G2 to give it a bit more "ooph".
adhesiveX: A Lightwave Group was started in Atlanta called LUMA - LW User's Group of Metro Atlanta. It was started off by a few individuals with Lee Stranhan's prodding when he was here doing the Community Tour. I was on the mailing List and I know they met a few times last year - but, that's about it. Haven't heard anything since.
I'll buy the third round of beers! A votre sante!

LUMA (Lightwave Users of Metro Atlanta)
1. This group does exist.
2. We seem to have gone into a summer recess.
3. Anyone who is interested can contact me directly at:

I live in the Suwanee area, just off of exit 111. I work downtown. I use the 45 minute bus ride each way back & forth to work on LW on a laptop.
I expect to set up a meeting shortly, I have been working on a project that hasn't given me much free time.
We have some very talented users in our group, our main difficulty has been setting a regular meeting time.
Some can't possibly meet after work (traffic is terrible), but others don't want to give up any time on their weekends.
So attendance has been spotty.
I personally wouldn't mind giving up one weekend afternoon a month - but thats me.
If we could get a core group to meet on a regular basis, I think the group would grow.
Thanks,
Mark Poole

Hey, you guys have some nice work! I spend a lot of time around Atlanta, and am currently writing from 3 hours north of Buckhead, in NC 10 minutes from Fontana. My base is in Orlando though. Hope you guys get together, I haven't heard anything of the CFLWUG in a long time. :]

I'm in Atlanta too. Just learning my way around LW, though, not a Pro (yet, hehe). It would be good to get all the Atlanta Lightwavers together and grab a beer or one.

I remember Newtek University came to Atlanta in 1995 hosted by
Bob Anderson and David Hibsher the two day course was great however, I will never forget when after the session demos when asked was there any questions? The entire room was silent_now mind you this was the days when version 4.0 was just released and I understand that lightwave was'nt for everyboby (alot of pure video pros) ,but It really was disheartening when those instructors wasn't challenged by inquisitive questions by true users of lightwave. After that day I yearned for the day when CG would be an understood medium that even us georgia boys could master and manipulate. Now I notice that Atlanta is not always on the list of cities that will be visited by lightwave content creators and thier tours. I hope local Atlanta users can get together and and become a true force in the CG industry, making Lightwave our 3d app of choice. Heck if Fanthom Studios can do it with Maya, I know we can do it with Lightwave.

In the latest Newtek world tour, Atlanta was one of the first places that Lee came to.
I agree, though, more work must be done to make the Lightwave Users Group of Metro Atlanta a viable concern with regular meetings and a promotional web site.
And I also agree, that with a solid local user community, more employeers may be encouraged by the knowledge there is a sizable talent pool.
I am working on drawing on the mailing list of over 30 names I have now, and have collected recently.

FYI:
Lee Stranahan will be in Atlanta on Oct 4 with a one day seminar. Lee says it is all new content - and $99.
Look for details here under a post from Stranahan:
