Does anyone know off the top of their head how they stack up?
I realize neither is an ideal solution, but the higher end stuff just isn't in any budget I get to play with.
So for a high bit rate AVHCD like the Panasonic AG-HMC40 (24Mbps, 21 video rest for audio) against the HDV.
Are they comparable? Google isn't being my friend today.... too much garbage in the search.

I'm somewhat new to working with HD video but I do have access to a Panasonic AG-HMC40 as well as a Canon XHA1 (HDV). The Panisonic works really well. I used it to shoot a soccer game and I was impressed by the video. As far as comparing it to the HDV camera ... left to the most basic and complete automation, I can't really tell the difference. Now I didn't go to a fancy film school so that might just be me.
The Panasonic does have some nice features that most people would expect in a prosumer camera, like white balance and iris controle, you can also controle zoom and focus from the same ring. On a downside, if you want to input XLR you need to get a separate piece that connects to the camera (at least mine didn't come with it).

Thanks. That panasonic was just the camera I was interested in. I currently have an FX7, and there is some appeal in a tapeless workflow, especially with SDHC getting so cheap. Another year and it could be less expensive than tape.

One thing I forgot to mention, My panisonic came with a free full version of Edius Neo.
