Expression Variables

I'm trying to use "scratch variables" when creating an expression (in 7.5c), but I'm having a problem. Here's what I'm doing:

1. In the Motion Options for an object, I add an Expression.

2. For scratch variable A, I enter 5.

3. In the expression box, I enter A.

But instead of 5, I seem to be getting a random number.

Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong?
