Speed Modeling Challenge #59 - Architecture
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

************************************************** *******
Rules:
1: Every week there will be a subject for you to model along with a time limit. You should spend no longer than the allocated time, then post a render of your model. As in most challenges like this, your honesty on modelling times is essential.
How you interpret the brief is up to you as long as the final model conforms to what is asked for.

2: Post a render of your model (min 800x600 pixels) in this thread with a wireframe.

3: LightWave should be used for modelling. 3rd party Plug ins are allowed.

4: You can enter as many times as you like, posting each in this thread. If you run over the time, the model can still be posted but won't be subject to the judging.

5: Time spent on texturing, setting up a scene for a render and rendering is not included in the allocated period.

**Please mention whether or not you would be happy to share the model.**

Ah come on now. I can turn out a decent render but my modeling hasn't improved since about 1999! :help:

Need to get my thinking cap on for this, something a bit out of the ordinary is called for. Hmmmm...............

I'm not sure if LWCad would be of much help here. :)

This is a window panel from the Scottish Parliament Building.
About 45 minutes modelling and loads of time randomising the model and setting up the render.

Quite a controversial building but I like it.

Very cool, Iain! I like all the different versions on each of the windows. Is that an fprime render?

Hey guys,

I have been following this thread for some time now and I want to try my hand at speed modeling. Kind of a rookie, but I gotta start sometime. My question is - Can I use Photoshop to add textures or does it all have to be done in Lightwave?

Thanks

Personally I don't really see a problem with that. This also might be a good opportunity for you to get some practice with applying your photoshop textures onto your models right in LW too. The time is only for modeling so if you spend more time on the texturing part it doesn't matter.

The most important thing is that you just participate, learn and have fun. Everything else is secondary as far as I'm concerned.

Yes it's FPrime. The LW version is pretty similar.................

The only part of the process that has to be all LW is the modelling.
Everything else is up to you!

Welcome aboard!

Well I always liked this door. If you don't know what it's from I didn't do it justice then! But.. it's the door from the Tantive IV from Star Wars. This is the door that Darth Vader steps through before capturing Princess Leia.

I spent the whole hour on this one. There are a bunch of parts that I didn't have time to really do very well so I just textured in many of them. And I didn't have time to bevel all the cutouts on the door. This one was a real time crunch for me! All poly modeling no subd on this one.

Three bounce MC interpolated render. Three area lights facing up at the ceiling and one large one at the back end of the hallway. I'm still getting some rendering artifacts. I think I need to tweak my raydiosity settings a bit.

Thanks Jeffry. Also, I appreciate the free subpatch videos you have on your site. That is where I am a little rusty. I used Lightwave way back when the video toaster came out. (before kids!) I haven't used it much since then. Anyway, thanks for the info and I look forward to participating.

Thanks Iain. :)

Kuzey, that looks so cool! It has a very insect feel to it. I like!

Love the temple RF! I especially like the columns and roofing.

Just a small update... I'm over the hour on modeling on this version, just fyi though. I just modeled in some detail I had to do with textures on the previous version. I also switched to a spherical camera.

If you've got it and are not using it, trust me, you're limiting yourself ( a scary thought given your talent ;) ).
Seriously though, you'll wonder how you lived without it once you start using it. The snap tools alone are worth the install. :D

I have the version that came with LW9 or was it 8 for free, I kept forgetting to install it when upgrading LW. Ill have to see if I can find the files and licence.

Yes, Where is LWCAD 1.5 which came free with LW9? I have a license no. which Newtek sent at the time, but the download is nowhere to be found, this comes up on Google:

That bridge came out great! Love the texturing and render on it.

I decided to do one more entry. Here's a spiral staircase. I kind of always wanted to model a spiral staircase. It was kind of fun figuring out the math for the steps and supports, etc. 1hr on modeling and about another hour or so on texturing and lighting.

I went over the time with this one by around 10 min. Trying to figure a bit of LWCAD during it, I`m not sure if it slowed me down or sped me up :D
And the render is a bit dull and probably extremely dark. Meh!
Based off a painting I saw a couple of years ago on some concept art site, were? I just cant remember.

Some Minimalist Architecture (aka 'easy to model' architecture!)

This is based on a reference photo but it caught my eye when it was recreated for testing the Fryrender beta a while ago.

Less than 30 minutes modelling as the props are just dropped in.

That is a wonderful render though!! Was that one a fryrender? or LW? It looks super smooth and real.

This was inspired by a rather vague memory of a photo. It may have been from a museum in NY.

Mainly just playing with the curved shapes.

Not long left if you want to enter this weeks challenge.

Iains window panel from the Scottish Parliament Building.
Great work, I remember seeing this building on the news and wondering what the architect had been smoking. Its grown on me a bit since though :D

JeffrySGs Starwars corridor
This brought back memories too and it looks pretty damn good

Kuzeys modular building thingy
You have a distinctive modeling style, You always bring your own personal touch to these models. This one wouldn't look out of place in an RTS Game.
Nicely done. Will we see a render?

JeffrySGs spiral staircase
I have a strange fascination with spiral staircases, its nearly impossible for me to climb one with my crutches but I just really like the look of them. Well done

Kuzeys Building
When I grow up I`ll live somewhere like this, drinking whiskey & smoking cigars while someone plays the piano off to the side, a little cool jazz perhaps :hey:

Iains Minimalist Architecture
A simple model with a stunning render.

Brilliant work all round guys, thanks for taking part:thumbsup:

Well, due to life interfering once again, I missed the deadline.
I'd done the durn thing but didn't have chance to upload it.

Anyway, figure I'd post it up even though the challenge is over, just because I'd feel I'd wasted it otherwise :p

Took just a smidge under the hour, will likely texture and render it for the heck of it. :)

Congrats to JeffrySGs, as usual, super entries, (mine excluded hehe). :jester:
