I have what is probably a very basic question for most. I'm trying to join the two curves in the picture below. Basically, I want the two curves to be joined into one object so I can extrude the curves as one object. I'm new to Lightwave and I'm not sure how to do this. Any help would be appreciated. :)

Welcome to LW.

I'd suggest copying all the points and pasting them into another layer.
Then turn on layer with the two shapes in the background.
Then the tedious part of tracing out point begins. I generally trace in four point polys in case I want to subdivide later. So, clockwise, select four polygons (generally this will be two from each shape). And hit "p" to make poly.
If you don't care about getting smooth rounded shapes by using Sub D's then you can just select larger chunks of points (still moving in clockwise circles) and then make poly.

Your two "curves" are actually just strings of two point poly's.

Good Luck

If you don't own LWCAD, you can do what Dexter says.

If you do have LWCAD, you can create the shape with the line and curve tools (you can trace it with background snap enabled) and then you can convert the curves to a polygon. The good thing about this process is you can change the polygon resolution interactively. This will create a polygon object you can extrude.

You could also make each shape into a polygon and stencil the inside shape onto the outside shape. Then delete the inside shape and then do your extrusion.

I was thinking something similar...

make each shape a poly...
extrude both of them but make the inside one a bit longer...
then boolean subtract the inside one from the outside one.

so many way...

Thanks for the help guys.

How, specifically, would I do this?

I have done a lot of 3D modeling in Autocad but Lightwave is a totally different environment which I'm sure will allow me to be much more efficient once I learn a lot of these types of tricks. In Autocad, I would create the outer circle, extrude it, then extrude the inner shape and subtract the inner shape from the outer shape and this would give me the results I'm looking for (similar to what Jeffry suggested).

I've extruded both shapes. How can I subtract the inner shape from the outer shape using a boolean?

Here's a screen cap. of what I have now:

I figured out how to speed boolean subtract. I just selected the smaller shape and hit speed boolean subtract and it automatically subtracted the smaller shape from the outer shape it was intersecting with. This is very similar to Autocad.

I'm sure I'll have more questions. :)

Edit.
