This just in... I received the information via e-mail and thought I might pass it along:

IBM released XLC for MacOS X. XLC is a world class C compiler highly tuned for Power4 and G5.

It's based on IBM's VisualAge compiler.

FORTRAN too!

I haven't heard of XLC before, but I gather this will assist people to write and compile software for OS X. I guess it must be an alternative to the GCC compiler.

It's interesting that IBM is assisting Apple with the software side of things. Maybe they'll sell more processors as a result.

Better benchmarks means faster apps means more tempted PC users means more G5 sales. If I were Apple or IBM I'd want to vet every G5 app to make sure it was as fast and efficient as possible!

Now just hope Newtek will consider/use this compiler..

That is great news,
it looks like the G5 will finally get a compiler that can match intels icc.
You might find this interesting:
http://www.spscicomp.org/ScicomP7/Presentations/Blainey-SciComp7_compiler_update.pdf
Especially the last two pages.

The PowerPC 970 (1.8GHz) gets SPEC scores of 937 SPECint2000 and 1051 SPECfp2000 ( http://www-3.ibm.com/chips/techlib/techlib.nsf/techdocs/A1387A29AC1C2AE087256C5200611780 )with that compiler, as compared to Veritests 800 SPECint2000 and 840 SPECfp2000 (2GHz.).
It would be nice if NT would use it for LW, that could get LW a much needed speed boost on the Mac.
Cheers,
Mike - PC lurker ;)

pc's will always be ugly.

Lol :D
I just luurve those qualified comments ;)
At least it looks like, for a change, you won't get dizzy watching those ugly PCs run circles around those "stylish" Macs.
Cheers,
Mike - who thinks a decent 19" industrial case has not only style, but class as well ;)

I dunno, I watched this show called TechTV, where they took you through customizing the case of a PC, at the end the metal case (all brushed aluminum) had been laser-etched and had custom graphics carved out, with plexiglass installed to maintain the body-ventilation, and some neon inside to boost the visual excitement.

It's a bit "Fast & Furious" but definitely NOT boring, but ugly is a personal definition.

I don't know if they'll be running circles around them Lightwolf... They might end up running *in* circles though, getting nowhere fast.

(NOTE: Let's cut the ***** already, eh?)

That's why I wrote
"it looks like ... you _won't_ get dizzy ... anymore..."
because the G5s might even be able to catch up with the IBM compiler. And I truly think this is good news... You know: Me thinks IBM compiler good thing for Apple!
I just wonder why the Apple community is so twitchy, sheesh, where's your sense of humour? ;)
Cheers,
Mike

OK this proves that the macs can be alot faster with other compilers.....end of story. Now lets see if Newtek can do a good Mac lightwave (Iwouldn't hold my breath).

Newtek prove us wrong....Please!!!..order yourselves a dual 2 ghz G5-optimize that software then throw it in our faces!!! and watch as the rest of th office try to order new shinny Macs for their desks....

Yeah man, I want my desktop glitzy too ;)

I, for one, am actually glad Apple is in bed with IBM. Motorola has been a weight around the neck that has been keeping Apple down. IBM was ahead of schedule with the chips, weren't they? That's why the machines were presented before Panther? When was Motorola ever on time? or kept up with production?

This IBM compiler is further proof that Apple has teamed up with the right partner.

I love the marriage of IBM power-nerdom under the hood encased in Apple sexy cool.

We aren't twitchy ;) .
We just love our machines that darn much. Sigh..
Oh what PC users are missing out on..

Jimzip :D

edit: I wonder why, after all this time, PC users haven't picked up on how much we love our machines, I wonder if they'll ever become curious about why we like them so much.

Jimzip,

You don't seem to realize that alot of us so called PC users do in fact own both machines. :D
I say use what ever makes you happy. I like all computers. I cut my teeth on the Amiga and then the PC then Mac and have used Sun workstations and even DEC VAX system. Well maybe I like all computers except that last one. :D

Cheers,
JS

Hi Jimzip,
I've had that years ago as well, then the Amiga died and nothing has come close since...
Makes me concentrate more on my work though :D
(I'm still not immune to the feeling though, there's still a couple of software packages I love, LW being on of them...)
Cheers,
Mike - who understands the feeling, but why for a Mac? ;)
