You don't. There's always either an item, a light, a camera or a bone selected.

There is one way, albeit not very practical. Delete all objects (meshes+nulls) or bones and you'll be left in a state of no-selection! :-/

It's quite annoying that not even plugin developers can't put LW in a state of no-selection. Another similar dumb implementation/restriction is the must-have-1-light-and-1-camera. Good riddance!
