Hi All,

I am trying to create an earth flyby scene....I have the background, the animation and everything looks awesome...BUT.... i have been trying to find a way to put a blueish white glow around the earth's athmosphere....

I checked the opther posts here and the only thing mentioned was the post processing plugin called Corona... it does not work for me.

The only other option is the blur effect that is built in..I cannot use it though becasue it uses the colours from the texture image map. I don't want that.

I've tried adding a gradient texture to the surface.... does not work...I know this is probbaly easy for a lot of you....but I am fairly new to this.

Please help.... is there a plugin I can use?...a way to add a texture?...

Thanks a milion,

Tom

all of the really cool scenes on the content disk (included with your copy of lightwave) are done basicly the same way... Place a slightly lagrer sphere around your planet... make it mostly luminous, and mostly transparent. use the shader plug in called edge transparency to make the edges trans... also use the terminator sharpness on the advanced surfacing panel to make the shadow fall right... best advice is: check out the content scenes.

Planet and atmospher (http://www.lwg3d.org/v3/tutorials.php?id=1&p=1)

There no pics anymore to show you what it looks like, but it gives the right effect you are looking for.

Here is an image from what I done with it,

Thanks Guys!!!!.... both solutions were great...

I just wish the world was like a discussion forum where everyone was willing to help a stranger. Just a word of sentiment that I think a lot of you will agree with.

Cheers,

Tom

If everyone used LightWave, the world would be a happier place.

Are you sure Mattclary??

How could we be truly happy if we couldn't compare LW to other products??:D

How will we ever be happy while there are other products to compare Lightwave with?

Here are some other example of ones I did, I forgot to lighten up the original water texture that I grabbed from NASA's FTP site that is why the water looks so dark as you can see. You can see artifacts in the atomosphere in the Fake Fresnal Image.

Fake Fresnal

Real Fresnal

Original Tutorial that gave me a starting point was at http://www.lwg3d.com/v3/index.htm but I do not know if it is back up there after their server crash problem.

Also you might want to check out NASA's site as you can get the Camera settings [fstop, angle etc...] that they use to help you set up the virtual camera.

A side note, This is the closest I can get as any closer it starts to show the texture. I'm using the second largest texture from NASA which comes in about 200 MB the one I want to use 700MB the the Super High Res one keeps crashing lightwave, it is apparently a memory problem as Maya catches the error to prevent crash and tells me why it could not load. My question is How much memory do I need to get this thing loaded?

Oh, we'd still have the Mac users. ;)
